UQ’s School of Economics is a leading provider of economics education in Australia, and ranks in the top 50 among Economics departments worldwide for its research.

Located on the St Lucia campus as part of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, the School is home to more than 2100 domestic and international students, 14 professional staff and 60 active teaching and research staff. Its accomplished scholars claim a large share of Australia’s economics honours, national teaching awards, competitive research grants, fellowships, publications and media coverage. The School also has an established research centre and an active seminar and visitor program, providing exposure to researchers from around the world.

About This Opportunity

The School of Economics is seeking to appoint a Deputy Head of School, to assist in providing leadership and management to the School. As the Deputy Head of School, you will act as an advocate within the School, supporting the implementation of School and University strategic plans. Some of the key accountabilities with this role will be:

  • Collaborating with the Head of School to formulate sub-strategies for the Strategic Plan.
  • Supporting the Head of School in operational management and leadership of the school.
  • Contributing to the supervision, development and mentoring of staff within the school.
  • Delegating duties to school staff ensuring the effective and efficient performance of the School’s functions.
  • Supporting teaching matters such as assessment extension, re-mark cases and appeals and grievances.
  • Representing the School on committees, and engaging with external organisations.
  • Maintain personal academic standing and credibility, including the pursuit of some research and teaching.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Our Ideal Candidate

As the ideal candidate, you will hold a PhD in Economics and have experience in leadership, strategic thinking and an organisational acumen. You will have a demonstrated ability to lead, manage and administer an academic organisation and its resources, including human, physical and financial resources. 

You will have demonstrated expert knowledge in an area relevant to economics, with a personal academic standing of research and education appropriate to a Professor or Associate Professor appointment, including an established track-record of publishing in internationally excellent journals and of successfully teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 3 years, with an underlying full-time continuing appointment at Academic level D or E.

The full-time equivalent base salary for a Level D will be in the range $146,825 - $161,756 plus super of up to 17% (total package available will be in the range of $171,785 - $189,255).

The full-time equivalent base salary for a Level E is $189,131 plus super of up to 17% (total package available will be up to $221,283).

A market loading may also be included where appropriate. In addition, the position of Deputy Head of School carries a non-superannuable management loading of $10,000 p.a.
