The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES) is part of the UQ Faculty of Science and currently has 104 academic staff, and 31 professional and technical staff and over 1,120 equivalent full-time students.

The School’s extensive teaching and research activities span the fields of geology, human and physical geography, environmental science and management, biodiversity conservation, geospatial science and remote sensing, mineral resources, palaeontology, geophysics, occupational health and safety sciences, and urban and regional planning. SEES teaches into a diverse range of programs for undergraduate, honours and postgraduate coursework students, and higher degree by research programs.

About This Opportunity

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences seeks a Research Assistant with expertise in Igneous Petrology/Geochemistry, to develop in situ Sr-isotope analysis by laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) at the Radiogenic Isotope Facility (UQ-RIF lab).

The role will support the Foundation Research Excellence Award (UQ-FREA) research project ‘Understanding volcanic eruption triggers: a new geochemical approach’ awarded to Dr Teresa Ubide. The primary role is to optimise the analysis of Sr-isotope variations at the mineral scale and investigate isotope evidence of magmatic processes prior to eruption.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

We seek an enthusiastic and motivated individual to undertake this project within the magmatic petrology research team led by Dr Teresa Ubide at The University of Queensland. The applicant should have an Honours degree in Earth Sciences or related field, with demonstrated expertise in Igneous Petrology/Geochemistry, and the ability to work independently preparing and analysing samples and interpreting geochemical data. The successful applicant will have good laboratory and record keeping skills, data analysis and interpretation, and the ability to write scientific journal articles. The applicants should have an interest in in situ geochemistry of magmatic minerals and willingness to develop geochemical protocols for isotope analysis via LA-MC-ICP-MS.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for up to 6 months with a possibility of extension at HEW level 6.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $80,784 - $86,768, plus super of up to 17% and recreation leave loading of 17.5%.
